What is Green Propolis?

Brazilian green propolis is a special type of propolis (a resinous substance collected by bees) produced primarily in Southeastern Brazil. Its unique green color comes from the plant source Baccharis dracunculifolia (commonly known as “Alecrim-do-campo”). This single botanical origin gives green propolis a distinctive chemical profile: it is rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids. These bioactive compounds provide multiple functional properties and highlight its industrial potential. International research shows that green propolis is highly concentrated in active compounds such as phenols, flavonoids, and terpenes.

Green propolis has a complex composition dominated by phenolic compounds (phenolic acids and esters, prenylated flavonoids). These are small bioactive molecules like Artepillin-C, caffeic acid and derivatives. Studies report hundreds of mg of phenolic compounds per gram of propolis. This profile makes green propolis a material with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential, among other biological effects.

Artepillin-C: The Key Compound

Artepillin-C (ARC) is the main phenolic compound found in Brazilian green propolis and its source plant B. dracunculifolia. It is a prenylated derivative of p-coumaric acid that accounts for many of the extract’s therapeutic effects. Recent reviews show that Artepillin-C offers a wide range of pharmacological benefits: it is a powerful antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, neuroprotective, gastroprotective, immunomodulatory, and anticancer agent. Research highlights mechanisms such as apoptosis induction and PAK1 kinase inhibition (linked to tumors and viral processes). Artepillin-C represents the core bioactivity of green propolis.

Raw Propolis

Natural unprocessed resin. Delivers all bioactive compounds in high concentrations. Standardized in phenolics and flavonoids (>25–40 mg/g), contains >2–5% Artepillin-C. Ideal for industrial blending and formulation.

Liquid Extract (Ethanol)

High-quality alcoholic fluid extract. Solubilizes bioactives in ethanol, ideal for liquids and sprays. Typical profile: >20–42 mg/mL phenolics, >9–19 mg/mL flavonoids, 0.8–3% Artepillin-C.

Paste Extract

Concentrated extract (~80% solids). Honey-like texture preserving propolis traits. Contains >70–120 mg/g phenolics, >25–45 mg/g flavonoids, 3–7% Artepillin-C. Used in capsules, foods, and creams.

Lyophilized Extract (Powder)

Freeze-dried extract turned into water-soluble powder. Preserves bioactives with solubility. Specs: >62–125 mg/g phenolics, >24–38 mg/g flavonoids, 2–7% Artepillin-C. Ideal for capsules, drinks, and cosmetics.
